    Does plaquenil work on osteoarthritis

It regulates the activity of the immune system, which may be overactive in some conditions. Hydroxychloroquine can modify the underlying disease process, rather than simply treating the symptoms.

I have been on Plaquenil for years. It has not helped me with fatigue. Things like vitamins and exercise might assist with decreasing the fatigue level. I have been on 2 Dmards and a biologic for the longest time. I also take Tramadol for pain and now Indomethicin has been added to the mix to help with stiffness. According to the American College of Rheumatology, hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, is a “disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD,” meaning that it helps reduce the pain and swelling that come with arthritis. It can also reduce the incidence of joint damage, thus lessening the risk of developing a long-term disability from complications of RA. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

Hydroxychloroquine is often taken in combination with other drugs such as methotrexate. Over the long term hydroxychloroquine can reduce pain, swelling and joint stiffness. It may be as long as 12 weeks before you notice the benefits.

I know I had never heard of it until my rheumatologist said that is what I have.along w/osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. Plaquenil takes quite a long time to get to its peak effectiveness depending on what you read, anywhere from 3 months to a year. Unless you are having significant side effects, try to give it at least 6 months before you decide it doesn't work for you. With Plaquenil, however, the most commonly prescribed anti-malarial, this sort of damage occurs only in 1 out of 5,000 people who take the drug for five years or more. For this reason though, it is important that you see an ophthalmologist for an exam before starting to take an anti-malarial medication for your lupus. Today, Plaquenil and other antimalarials are also used to treat and help prevent symptoms caused by certain autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA, systemic lupus erythematosus, and discoid lupus, even though these diseases are not caused by malaria parasites.
