So after three weeks of taking Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine I developed a rash and had to stop. Now I'm really worried since Plaquenil is supposed to be the 'life insurance' drug of lupus, people have less flares on it, live longer, etc. Does this mean I have to be on steroids, and/or stronger drugs like Imuran and Cellcept, forever? I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies. Whether you try Plaquenil or not is ultimately up to you and your doctor, but a lot will depend on the type and severity of reactions that you've had. Rashes are certainly a lot less severe than respiratory reactions. Note This document contains side effect information about hydroxychloroquine. I am still fighting this allergic reaction. I just spent a few days in the hospital on IV steroids. they said that Plaquenil can take up to 50 days to clear the body. Anyone else had to deal with this? How long did it take to clear up? Any helpful tips? Also, on a facebook page some people posted pics of their Lupus rashes. That's a real common side effect of Lupus is unexplained rashes. If you've ever had an allergic reaction to a drug then this is the type of reaction you'd have if you were allergic to the Plaquenil; and they'd stay until the Plaquenil was out of your system. If they're coming and going more than likely it isn't the Plaquenil. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine.
