    Plaquenil and systemic lupus

Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because its signs and symptoms often mimic those of other ailments.

The coexistence of systemic lupus erythematosus SLE and myasthenia gravis MG is rarely reported, and most of the published studies are case reports. Hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial agent, is an essential treatment in patients with SLE but special caution is recommended when used in MG patients. Sep 30, 2016 Systemic lupus erythematosus SLE is a chronic multisystem autoimmune disorder in which 20 % of patients are diagnosed in childhood. Childhood-onset SLE is associated with higher morbidity and mortality than adult-onset SLE. The aims of disease management with early immunosuppression are to decrease disease activity and improve quality of life. Anti-malarial drugs, such as Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine, is often used to manage lupus and can also be effective in scleroderma. Plaquenil is thought to interfere with communication between immune cells, which can suppress the damaging effect of an overly active immune response without raising a patient’s risk of susceptibility to infections.

Some people are born with a tendency toward developing lupus, which may be triggered by infections, certain drugs or even sunlight. The most distinctive sign of lupus — a facial rash that resembles the wings of a butterfly unfolding across both cheeks — occurs in many but not all cases of lupus.

Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is commonly used to help keep mild lupus-related problems, such as skin and joint disease, under control. This drug is also effective at preventing lupus flares. Today, Plaquenil and other antimalarials are also used to treat and help prevent symptoms caused by certain autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis RA, systemic lupus erythematosus, and discoid lupus, even though these diseases are not caused by malaria parasites. Plaquenil belongs in a class of medications known as disease-modifying. In 1941, discoid lupus patients were treated successfully with Atabrine, a compound developed in Germany in the 1920s. In the mid-1940s, both hydroxychloroquine HCQ and chloroquine CQ had been synthesized. In 1955 HCQ was shown to be effective for both systemic lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
