Antibiotics containing chemicals called sulfonamides can trigger a reaction if you have a sulfa allergy. These antibiotics include combination drugs: An allergy to sulfonamide medications is different from having an adverse reaction to wine or food that contains sulfites.

Other medications that may cause a reaction. Other types of sulfa medications may trigger a reaction in some people who have a sulfa allergy Sulfasalazine Azulfidine, used to treat Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis Dapsone, used to treat leprosy, dermatitis and certain types of pneumonia Keep in mind. It takes a really long time for the Plaquenil to kick in. It may even take a year. Mine didn't start working until I was on it for 8 months and I take more than you do. I take 200 mg twice a day. I initially started at 800mg a day then dropped it to 400 mg a day. Please don't give up, you will have good days and bad days. I can no longer take levoquin as with all my other meds the CNS effects were terrible the last time. I can take the cipro though. I would just do what your doc says. I have been off my Plaquenil for about 5 weeks now as I have been on a long dose of diflucan and this is another drug that bothers me. Some of us just have more issues than others.

If you have HIV/AIDS, you may have an increased sensitivity to sulfonamide medications. Having a reaction to sulfites in something you eat or drink doesn't mean you'll be allergic to sulfonamide medication.

Hydroxychloroquine oral tablet is available as a brand-name drug and a generic drug. Brand name Plaquenil. Hydroxychloroquine comes only as a tablet you take by mouth. Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat malaria, lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies. Whether you try Plaquenil or not is ultimately up to you and your doctor, but a lot will depend on the type and severity of reactions that you've had. Rashes are certainly a lot less severe than respiratory reactions. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is very near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosing schedule. Do not double dose at one time to catch up. Plaquenil should be stored away from light and moisture and at room temperature up to 86 degrees F.

If you are allergic to sulfa drugs does this mean you can. I have been allergic to sulfa meds for over 30 years. I have been taking plaquenil for about 8 years with no problems. However, I was givin the generic Plaquenil at first, and I did have a reaction to that - until now I didn't reliese was the same as my sulfa reaction.
