While these reviews might be helpful, they are not a substitute for the expertise, skill, knowledge and judgement of healthcare practitioners. Hi, I was diagnosed with RA and was put on sulfa, my rheumy tried adding mtx but i had awful side effects so am now on hydroxychloroquine and sulfa..this combination worked for anyone? Hi I've been on this combination for a few months and unfortunately it hasn't worked for me - but that's not to say it won't for you, we are all different in how we react to drugs. Sulphasalasine was helpful in my case but took 12 weeks to kick in.

Hydroxychloroquine plaquenil and sulfasalazine azulfidine are used for mild rheumatoid arthritis. they are not as powerful as other dmards, but they usually cause fewer side effects. Sulfasalazine provides RA symptom relief by reducing joint inflammation and stopping or slowing down the progression of the disease. Sulfasalazine is most effective in individuals who are experiencing more mild to moderate Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms; however, it has also been found to be effective in some individuals with more severe cases. Sulfasalazine is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD indicated for the treatment of adults and children over 6 with RA who have not responded to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs. DMARDS decrease the pain and swelling of inflammatory arthritis and may also prevent damage to joints.

I'm about to start MTX & am hoping that I wont have side effects with that! The side effects of the methotrexate for me were horrendous (chronic chest infections) and I'm now asthmatic as a result. I've stopped Sulfa as I was experiencing a bad taste & smell, which may be caused by sulfa. After a while it wasn't as effective and I too was prescribed methotrexate alongside.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil for Cicatricial Alopecia. Oct 22, 2017 Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is a slow acting drug. It can take up to 8 weeks or more before the medication really starts to have an effect and actually help an individual using the drug. Because hydroxychloroquine is so delayed in its onset, I usually give it 4-6 months before really deciding if it is working. and sometimes even longer.
