It also associated with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, and it is rheumatoid factor positive in 90 percent of cases. Reading the warnings, I see that there is concern about effects on the eyes (retinas). The alternative to Plaquenil is a slightly different anti malarial called Quinacrine. Plaquenil replaced Quinacrine formerly called Atabrine for anti malarial prophylaxis so now the Quinacrine has to be made up into pills or gel capsules by a compounding pharmacy. If you google you will find details of compounding pharmacies. Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug, meaning that it can take up to 6 months to experience the full benefits of this medication, but it is possible for symptoms to improve in as few as 1 or 2 months. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. The side effects of these medications are far scarier! I have several issues with my retinas already, and don't feel comfortable putting them at more risk. There are other medications but they're usually saved for those with a more severe disease, particularly joint problems.

Hello! Here is a short list Prednisone, Imuran, Remicade, Methotrexate Later sidesteps Prednisone's side effects, which include weight gain, mood swings, diabetes and eye problems, such as cataracts. For reasons not yet completely understood, it can also suppress the immune response in lupus. Plaquenil is used to treat fatigue, pain, skin rashes, and inflammation, especially around the lungs. It is one of the most frequently used medications for lupus because studies show that it may prevent lupus flares and kidney damage. I am taking Plaquenil since 10 there are side effects, but your doctor also will check your blood on a regular basis and would detect right away if there would be something wrong with your liver or you have Lupus, it would be more dangerous for your inner organs,if you wouldn`t take any medications.
