    Hydroxychloroquine cause low wbc

I was diagnosed with discoid lupus 18 years ago and was prescribed Plaquenil, which I have taken since then. In October 2012, I was also diagnosed with Sjogrens Syndrome but, as I was already taking Plaquenil, was advised the treatment was the same for Sjogrens.

Yes, Plaquenil can cause aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia. So yes, this could be the cause of your WBC count going down, and for anemia that you have. Apart from that it can also be due to anti-thyroid cancer drugs. Please discuss with your doctor, and see if some other drugs can be started for you. Take care! Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is a drug that is classified as an anti-malarial drug. Plaquenil is prescribed for the treatment or prevention of malaria. It is also prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and the side effects of lupus such as hair loss, joint pain, and more. Low white cells are a part of the autoimmune issue. This is something that I have dealt with for years. I have been on the Plaquenil a couple of years now and my immunologist told me that Plaquenil doesn't cause the same issues as the DMARDS or the methotrexates, imuran, etc.

From research I have done online, I gather that low white cell count can also be a symptom of the Sjogrens in itself. At a recent medical with my doctor, blood tests were taken and I had a call a couple of days later telling me to stop taking g Plaquenil immediately as I have a very low white cell count and that it is sometimes a side effect of Plaquenil.

I know there are other causes for low white blood count, but I figured I'd see if anyone else has the experience with good long-term benzodiazapine use for seizure control as I have and if it's been the cause for low wbc.
