    Coming off plaquenil

It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world.

Jan 29, 2007 As some of you know I started on Plaquenil 6 weeks ago. After two weeks I stopped it because of liver pain, and we found out I had raised liver enzymes. I stayed off it for two weeks until I could contact my rheumatologist who was on holiday My rheumatologist did not think think the Plaquenil w. I recently decided to stop taking Plaquenil because I was having constant chest pains even more so than I usually have due to Lupus. Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. I was taken off Plaquenil last year for the same reason - blurry vision. My rheumy said that since I was only on it for four months it could not be affecting the retina, something the retina specialist backed up. Rheumy said that it does sometimes affect the lens and refraction, which is what causes the blurriness.

For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

Biggest problem is usually return of the disease that Prednisone was suppressing. In very rare instances one can have acute adrenal insufficiency manifested by abdominal pain, fever, loss of consciousness, weakness.

My Neurologist then advised me to come off Plaquenil as he said it was such a nasty drug! No communication between the pair of them within the same hospital, where I also work ironically! Within a few weeks of coming off Plaquenil I was in a massive, and I do mean MASSIVE relapse, which took ages to get over. Plaquenil is prescribed as a disease-modifier, in other words, to decrease pain, decrease swelling, and prevent joint damage and disability. It is not known how Plaquenil works but researchers believe that Plaquenil interferes with communication between cells within the immune system. Ultimately, it is thought to block proinflammatory.
