    Nitrification is an important step in the nitrogen cycle in soil. Nitrification is an aerobic process performed by small groups of autotrophic bacteria and archaea.

    Denitrifying bacteria, microorganisms whose action results in the conversion of nitrates in soil to free atmospheric nitrogen, thus depleting soil fertility and reducing agricultural productivity. Thiobacillus denitrificans, Micrococcus denitrificans, and some species of Serratia, Pseudomonas, and Achromobacter are implicated as denitrifiers. The therapeutic action of methylene blue on bacteria and other parasites is probably due to its binding effect with cytoplasmic structures within the cell and also its interference with oxidation-reduction processes. Methylene Blue is very similar to anti parasite/malarial drug Chloroquine MB C16H18ClN3S / Chloroquine C18H26ClN3. Nitrifying bacteria are classified as obligate chemolithotrophs. This simply means that they must use inorganic salts as an energy source and generally cannot utilize organic materials. They must oxidize ammonia and nitrites for their energy needs and fix inorganic carbon dioxide CO 2 to fulfill their carbon requirements.

    The second step (oxidation of nitrite into nitrate) is done (mainly) by bacteria of the genus Nitrobacter and Nitrospira. This process was discovered by the Russian microbiologist Sergei Winogradsky.
