    Restarting plaquenil

It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world.

When I was started on Plaquenil 400mg it wasn't long until I caught a cold that turned into a chest infection. This was very rare for me. There was barely a day pass over the next 6 months when I wasn't sick and then needed antibiotics for chest infections and my GP thought it was related to the plaquenil but I needed to discuss it with my Rheumi. Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up. Plaquenil does not need to be stopped for surgery so it can be restarted after the procedure. Although in studies Celebrex does not cause increased bleeding, unilke other older NSAIDs, some surgeons still advise to stop it to be safe. In general, Celebrex can be restarted the day after the procedure once the risk of bleeding is over. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called antimalarials. It is used to prevent and treat acute attacks of malaria. It is also used to treat discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis in patients whose symptoms have not improved with other treatments. One of the problems with Plaquenil is that because it's so slow to act, the improvements are also slow and subtle. So most people don't realize that they've improved until they STOP taking it. I've been on it twice, along with Atabrine another antimalarial. In my case, it never worked so I didn't notice a change.
