Retinal drusen form as an accumulation and aggregation of lipofuscin waste products of the RPE and photoreceptors at the layer of Bruch‟s membrane. Drusen are most commonly seen in atrophic retinal disease such as age-related macular degeneration, although they may be seen in relatively benign conditions such as dominant familial drusen. Drusen. The appearance of drusen — yellow deposits — in the retina indicates the development of early-stage dry macular degeneration left. As the condition progresses to the advanced stage right, the drusen get larger, bleeding occurs and the light-sensitive cells that make up the macula become scarred. It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress.

  5. Basal Laminar Drusen. Basal laminar drusen is a condition in which yellow round deposits of lipid waste accumulate between the base of the retinal pigment epithelium and Bruch's membrane in the outer retina. These lesions appear in young adulthood as opposed to the drusen of age related macular degeneration which develop in late life.

Dr. Marmor’s research team also recommended that screening should be performed within the first year of initiating therapy, and then annually after five years of Plaquenil use. The risk for retinal toxicity begins once the patient has used Plaquenil for five to seven years and/or has taken a cumulative dose of more than 1,000g. Drusen are small yellow deposits of fatty proteins lipids that accumulate under the retina. The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the inside of the eye, near the optic nerve. Des, I am sorry to here that the plaquenil maybe causing you same trouble with your eyes. If the plaquenil is the issue maybe you can try half of what you need. The one thing good is that your eyes will clear up if it is the plaguenil, the down side is you will have to find something else. Best to you.

Hi Everyone, I went to my Rheumatologist last week. I take these for the arthritis associated with my lupus. If you have any particular questions, I would be happy to answer them. The chance of damage to the eyes with plaquenil is extremely slim. I have been taking hydroxychloroquine which is the generic of plaquenil for the past three years. Drugs to Treat Pregnant Woman with Malaria – The treatment of malaria in pregnant women has become more challenging in recent years, as many types of malaria are developing resistance to the standard arsenal of drugs. In locations where the dominant form of malaria is still chloroquine-sensitive, chloroquine can be used safely throughout pregnancy.
